Getting Started with ChatGPT

Last updated: 2026-08-12

Overview

The fastest way to fail at “getting started with ChatGPT” is to ask one huge question and quit. A steadier path: 7 days, 20–30 minutes each, using real micro-tasks to learn specify → review → iterate. This guide gives daily goals, acceptance checks, and copy-ready prompts. Prefer ChatGPT; if access is hard, run the same drills via the domestic entry without pasting secrets. For China access, see the complete guide.

Before you start

Day 1: Your first working chat

Goal: Send 3 messages and feel how multi-turn chat works.

Steps:

  1. Open chatgpt.com or the domestic entry
  2. Sign up / log in
  3. Run the prompt below
  4. Follow up: “Shorten to ~80 words but keep the comparison table.”

Prompt:

Explain to a total beginner how ChatGPT differs from Google search.
Include: 1) one-sentence takeaway; 2) a 3-row comparison table; 3) one good use case and one bad use case.
English, under 200 words.

Done when: You can say “search returns links; ChatGPT returns drafts—I must verify facts.”

Day 2: The task brief skeleton

Goal: Learn a reusable frame—role, goal, audience, constraints, output format.

Steps:

  1. Pick something you actually need this week (email, social post, one-line status)
  2. Fill the skeleton before sending
  3. Compare vs. a vague “write an email for me”

Skeleton:

Role: {e.g., senior admin assistant}
Goal: {what to produce}
Audience: {who reads it, tone}
Constraints: {length, bans, deadline}
Output: {Markdown list / table / plain text}

Example:

Role: senior admin assistant
Goal: reminder email asking teammates to submit weekly reports by Friday
Audience: same-team colleagues, polite and direct
Constraints: under 120 words, no hype
Output: subject line + body

Done when: One skeleton is saved in your notes as reusable.

Day 3: Office drafts—email & meeting notes

Goal: Produce sendable first drafts, not final sends.

Task A: Polish an email

Here is my draft. Please:
1) keep my intent; 2) make it clearer and more professional; 3) list 3 edits you made and why.
Draft:
"{paste}"

Task B: Meeting minutes

Turn these rough notes into minutes:
Format: time / attendees / decisions / action items (owner + due date)
Mark unknowns as [TBD]
Notes: {paste}

Done when: You read the output aloud once; owners and dates are human-confirmed.

Day 4: Study mode—explain & self-test

Goal: Use ChatGPT as a tutor—not a homework machine.

Task A: Learn a concept

Teach me "{concept}":
1) analogy; 2) three self-check questions with short answers; 3) two common misconceptions.
My background: {e.g., product manager / sophomore CS}.

Task B: Stress-test your notes

Review my class notes. Flag up to three places that may be wrong or oversimplified, and how to verify each.
Notes: {paste}

Done when: You answer at least one self-check question before peeking.

Day 5: Build a fact-check reflex

Goal: See hallucination risk and force uncertainty labels.

Steps:

  1. Ask something with specific numbers or dates in a domain you can verify
  2. Require uncertainty tags
  3. Cross-check against an official source

Prompt:

Answer the question below. Rules:
- Tag uncertain claims as [verify] and say where to check officially
- Do not invent prices, dates, or legal quotes
Question: {your question}

Done when: You find at least one claim that needs your own lookup.

Day 6: Multi-turn iteration

Goal: Practice follow-ups instead of one 2,000-word mega-prompt.

Chain: draft → shorten → tone shift → add examples

Turn 1:

Write a casual 100-word event blurb with [TIME] and [PLACE] placeholders.

Turn 2 (after copying the reply):

Make it more formal for external clients. Keep clear placeholders I can fill in.

Turn 3:

Add a one-line RSVP note and three subject-line options under 12 words each.

Done when: You can name three concrete changes from turn 1 to final.

Day 7: Personal template library

Goal: Save three winners and pick a long-term entry point.

Steps:

  1. Name and store three prompts from Days 2–6 (e.g., “email polish v1”)
  2. Skim the ultimate prompt guide for two upgrades
  3. Choose official vs. a dual-track plan from the China access guide

Organizer prompt:

Turn these three prompts into a personal template table: name, use case, required placeholders, acceptance check.
{paste your three prompts}

Done when: Notes contain ≥3 named templates; you know FAQ for blockers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to follow Days 1–7 in strict order?

No. The sequence covers chat → task brief → office → study → fact-check → iteration → templates. If one scenario is urgent, jump to that day and backfill later.

Is the free tier enough for this plan?

Yes. Nothing here requires a paid model. If a model is rate-limited, switch to another free option or continue the next day.

How long should my prompts be?

The Day 2 task brief skeleton matters more than length—role, goal, audience, constraints, and output format in roughly 5–10 lines is enough.

Where should I look when I get stuck?

Signup or access → FAQ and the China access guide. Vague outputs → revisit Day 2 and add constraints.
