GPT Image 2 Guide: Prompts, Editing and Production Workflow

Updated: 2026-09-09. For ChatGPT Images 2.5 / GPT Image 2.5 (including API Flare / Sunburst), read the long-form guide: GPT Image 2.5: Flare / Sunburst Selection & Hands-On. This page still centers the Image 2 workflow.

Overview

Good image generation is closer to writing a creative brief than stacking adjectives. Define the asset’s job, composition, subject, visual language, and exclusions; then change one variable per iteration. Product names and API capabilities can change, so verify the image model currently offered in ChatGPT or OpenAI Platform. For next-gen 2.5 vs established 2 selection, see the GPT Image hub.

Build the prompt as an art brief

Use this order: purpose and canvas → main subject → composition and camera → lighting and palette → materials and style → exact text → exclusions. Example: “16:9 article hero; one ceramic robot centered with generous empty space on the left; eye-level 50 mm look; soft overcast light; cobalt and warm gray; editorial 3D render; no logo, watermark, border, or extra limbs.”

Generate, inspect, then edit

Start with a composition draft. Inspect anatomy, object count, text, edge artifacts, brand marks, and whether the image still works at its final display size. In the next turn say what must remain unchanged and name one edit: “Keep camera, pose, palette, and background. Replace only the cup with a closed notebook.” Local edits are easier to judge than complete re-prompts.

Use references responsibly

State which traits a reference controls—layout, palette, product geometry, or character continuity. Do not ask for a living artist imitation or upload assets you lack rights to use. For product work, provide approved logos and packaging as references, then compare generated details against the source file.

Make text and layout reliable

Keep on-image copy short, quote it exactly, specify language and capitalization, and reserve enough negative space. Generate the illustration without text when spelling is critical, then typeset in a design tool. Never trust tiny labels, legal copy, QR codes, diagrams, or data charts without rebuilding and checking them.

Production checklist

  • Correct aspect ratio and safe crop
  • Subject count, hands, reflections, shadows, and repeated objects checked
  • On-image words copied exactly
  • No accidental logo, signature, or watermark
  • Rights and consent documented for references
  • Export inspected at thumbnail and full size
  • Important facts and product details match approved sources

API workflow

For automation, keep the creative brief and reference asset IDs versioned. Save prompt, model ID, size, quality option, latency, and output review status. Use OpenAI Platform for current endpoints and limits. API keys belong in server-side secrets, never browser code or shared prompt documents.

Before you trust the result

  • Confirm names, dates, numbers, links, and quoted text against the source.
  • Treat plan limits, pricing, model IDs, and regional availability as time-sensitive.
  • Remove passwords, API keys, personal identifiers, and confidential business data.
  • Test the output in the real destination before publishing or automating it.

Questions people ask

Which plan includes every feature?

No static answer stays accurate; check the current product and account page before purchasing.

Can I use outputs without review?

No. Verify facts, rights, confidential data, and task-specific acceptance criteria.
