Claude Code Guide

Last updated: 2026-08-12

Overview

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agent-style coding tool for developers: in terminal or IDE it reads repositories, edits files, runs commands, and interprets results. Unlike claude.ai web chat, it behaves more like a pair programmer. Install methods, supported platforms, and pricing follow Anthropic docs in real time.

What problem does Claude Code solve?

Good for one-off explanationsGood for multi-step refactors, bugfixes, scaffolding

Best for: Engineers with Git workflows who can run tests locally.
Poor fit: Environments without version control or command execution.

Install and authorization (overview)

Exact commands change with versions—always follow official docs. Typical flow:

  1. Install the CLI or IDE extension from official channels
  2. Log in with an Anthropic account or API credentials
  3. Start from the project root so the tool indexes relevant files
  4. On first run, confirm which directories are readable and which commands can execute

Users in China: if download or auth pages are restricted, see the Claude China access guide. Never download “cracked Claude Code” from untrusted mirror sites.

Typical workflows

1) Fix a failing test

Test `tests/test_checkout.py::test_coupon` is failing.
Please: 1) read the failure stack; 2) locate root cause; 3) propose a minimal patch; 4) explain how to verify locally.
Do not change files unrelated to coupon logic.

2) Small-scope refactor

Change `utils/format_date` callers from moment-style to ISO8601,
only under `src/orders/`; keep public function signatures unchanged; list affected tests.

3) Understand an unfamiliar module

I'm a new developer. In ~400 words explain `packages/auth/`:
responsibilities, entry files, public API, main dependencies; name 3 files I should read first.

Permissions and security (required reading)

Claude Code can read files, edit files, and run shell—over-permissioned access is like handing your laptop to a third party.

  • Repos: Enable only on trusted projects; fork open-source contributions into isolated environments first
  • Secrets: Keep .env, credentials.json in .gitignore; check whether the tool reads ignored files before enabling
  • Commands: Confirm destructive ops (rm -rf), network requests, package installs; follow corporate AI policy
  • Output: Generated code still needs code review + CI—don’t merge straight to main

How it fits with Cursor / Copilot

  • Copilot/Cursor inline completion: Faster for single-file typing
  • Claude Code: More systematic for cross-file tasks, tests, and architecture explanations

Combine them: inline completion for functions, Claude Code for integration tests and doc updates.

When to use Claude Code vs the API

NeedClaude CodeSelf-built API agent
Read repo tree and apply patchesBuilt-inYou implement tools
Run tests and parse stderrBuilt-inYou sandbox commands
Custom product UXLess flexibleFull control
Enterprise audit requirementsFollow Anthropic product termsYou own logging and isolation

If your team already ships an internal coding agent, Claude Code can still be a baseline to compare latency, edit quality, and permission models before investing in custom tooling.

Day-one setup checklist

  1. Clone or open a non-production repo with passing CI
  2. Confirm .gitignore covers secrets; scan for hard-coded tokens before first run
  3. Start Claude Code at repo root; deny broad filesystem access if prompted
  4. Run a read-only task (“explain module X”) before any write permission
  5. After first edit, run the smallest relevant test suite locally—don’t trust green checks from the tool alone
  6. Document which commands your team allows (e.g., npm test, pytest, but not curl to prod)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Granting shell access on a laptop with production credentials in plain env vars
  • Asking for “refactor the whole repo” without scope boundaries—prefer directory or feature slices
  • Merging generated patches without reading diffs line by line
  • Assuming package versions in suggestions match your lockfile—always verify package.json / requirements.txt

Frequently asked questions

Does Claude Code train on my code?

Data handling follows Anthropic’s current terms and product settings; enterprise users should read enterprise agreements and data controls.

Can I use it without an API key?

Packaging varies—some tie to Claude Pro/Team, others bill via API. Follow the install wizard.

What if a command it runs fails?

Paste full stderr back and ask it to “fix based on logs only—don’t guess environment variable values.”

How is this different from a self-built Claude API agent?

Claude Code is an official packaged dev experience; self-built agents are flexible but you maintain tool calls, sandboxes, and security.

Can I use Claude Code on Windows?

Platform support evolves—check Anthropic docs for current OS and terminal requirements before installing in corporate environments.

Should interns get Claude Code access?

Only on sanitized repos with command restrictions; pair with mandatory review until they understand diff and test discipline.

Action path

Today: Run the “understand a module” flow on a small practice repo. This week: Use a real bugfix task and measure human edit time. Long term: Save effective command templates in team CONTRIBUTING.md and define a command allowlist policy.

If Claude Code is your first agentic coding tool, compare habits with general ChatGPT coding guides on this site—especially prompt structure and verification discipline—before scaling to production repos.
