Start with the real official address

The official ChatGPT web app is https://chatgpt.com/. Type or bookmark that address instead of relying on sponsored search results. A copied logo, familiar color scheme, or “official” in a page title does not establish ownership. Check the complete hostname before entering a password or payment details.

OpenAI Platform is the developer console for API projects, keys, usage, and developer billing. It is not the normal chat page. The two products belong to the same ecosystem, but a ChatGPT subscription and API usage are generally billed separately.

Prepare before creating an account

Use an email address you expect to control for years, not a disposable inbox or an address owned by a temporary employer. Generate a unique password with a password manager. During signup, keep the device, browser, and network reasonably stable; repeated verification requests and rapid environment changes can trigger security checks.

Do not buy a pre-registered account. You cannot verify its history, recovery details, or whether the seller retains access. Do not give a registration service your mailbox password or one-time verification codes. 3. For email signup, open the verification message. Check spam and corporate filters before requesting another message.
4. Complete only the information required by the page. Never send a verification code to a person claiming to be support.
5. After login, open account settings and verify your email, sign-in method, and available security controls.
6. Start a new conversation with a harmless test task. Confirm that sending, receiving, and conversation history behave as expected.

Successful login is not the end of setup. Review whether the account offers two-factor authentication, passkeys, or a way to sign out other sessions; labels may change over time. On shared devices, explicitly sign out instead of merely closing the tab. Check that your browser has not saved the password for a look-alike site.

Set a data boundary before real work begins. Do not paste passwords, API keys, payment card data, identity documents, customer lists, confidential contracts, or unreleased source code into a conversation. When a business document must be analyzed, remove direct identifiers and unique combinations such as exact timestamps, project codenames, order numbers, and internal URLs. Submit only the smallest excerpt required.

Do not assume that paying for ChatGPT gives an API credit balance. Before subscribing, inspect the billing period, currency, renewal terms, included features, and merchant identity. Avoid “lifetime Plus,” shared accounts, and discounted recharge services. If payment fails, retain the visible error code and use official support rather than handing card details to a broker.

Troubleshoot signup and login

Blank page or repeated verification

Test in a private window, disable extensions that modify pages or network requests, and clear cookies for the affected site only. Make sure the operating system clock is accurate. Verification email never arrives

A model is missing after login

Models may roll out by plan, account, region, and capacity. Logging out repeatedly cannot force eligibility. Check your own model picker, plan page, and official release information. A screenshot from another user is not an entitlement for your account.

Suspicious-activity warning

Change the password, secure the underlying email account, and sign out unfamiliar sessions if the option is available. Stop rapid login attempts. Genuine support should never need your complete password, recovery codes, or one-time authentication code.

Can several people share one personal account?

It is a poor security and privacy practice and may conflict with applicable terms. Organizations should use an appropriate team or enterprise product and maintain member provisioning and offboarding.

Must I pay immediately?

Not necessarily. Complete a real task on the currently available free tier, then decide whether model access, limits, or speed justify a paid plan. Trust only the plan details shown in your account.
