Why this guide
The usual failure mode is asking the model for answers and copying them—then freezing when the exam or job context changes. A durable AI study workflow flips that: you attempt first; the model explains, quizzes, critiques, and structures notes. Below are three pipelines plus a spaced-review loop. Entry: ChatGPT; non-sensitive practice: domestic entry. Pair with Getting started.
Outcomes
- Practice → feedback → review that you can measure
- Notes that become searchable cards
- Paper reading that resists fake citations
- Clear tutor vs ghostwriting boundaries
Three hard rules
- Produce your own attempt before the model grades
- Textbooks/papers win conflicts; model text is “[VERIFY]” by default
- No unpaid full copyrighted books, grade sheets, or private lab data (privacy)
Pipeline A — Practice / drills
- Scope today’s set (chapter or 5–10 missed items)
- Attempt closed-book; note uncertainties
- Send item + your answer; ask for verdict + where you broke—no full solution yet
- Take one hint; retry; only then full solution
- Generate 3 variants; retest next day
You are a strict, kind tutor. Here is the problem and my answer.
1) Judge correctness and where reasoning breaks
2) Give ONE hint first; wait for “still stuck” before full solution
3) After solution, give 1 variant (no answer yet)
Problem: { }
My answer: { }
Background: { }
From this missed item, make 3 variants (same concept, new numbers/context).
Table: variant | concept | trap. No answers.
Missed item: { }
Done when: each miss has a one-line “why I failed,” ≥1 variant retested, you can teach the concept aloud.
Pipeline B — Notes
- Within 15 minutes after class, write 5–10 rough points in your words
- Ask for structure + likely errors
- Fix against the textbook; generate Q/A cards
- Weekly Feynman pass
Here are my notes. Please:
1) Structure as Definition / Steps / Example / Misconceptions
2) Flag 3 possible errors/oversimplifications and what textbook section type to check
3) Do not invent theorem names absent from notes
Notes: { } Course: { } Level: { }
Turn these verified notes into 8 Q/A cards (A ≤ 40 words) plus 2 “easy to confuse” contrast cards.
Notes: { }
I will explain “{concept}” to a total beginner. Ask one clarifying question per segment.
Score clarity/accuracy/examples (1–5) and list 2 likely mistakes.
Start by saying “Please give segment 1.”
Pipeline C — Papers / long reads
- Self-read title, abstract, conclusion, figures (25–40 min)
- Write your three-sentence understanding
- Ask for a structure map from pasted text only, then challenge your summary
- Verify every citation/number in the PDF (fact-checking)
- Keep a one-pager of only verified lines
Use ONLY the pasted text—no outside paper knowledge.
Output: research question; method steps; key results (quote the text); limits; questions I may have misunderstood.
Text: { }
My three-sentence take: { }
List possible mismatches; for each, which paper section type to re-check.
Do not invent page numbers or missing experimental numbers.
Weekly rhythm
| Day | Focus | AI role | You must do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | New concepts | Analogy + misconceptions | Write your definition |
| Tue | Drills | Grade without spoiling | Closed-book answers |
| Wed | Notes | Structure + cards | Fix vs textbook |
| Thu | Variants | Generate variants | Timed redo |
| Fri | Paper | Structure + challenge | Read abstract/figures |
| Sat | Feynman | Socratic listener | Speak aloud |
| Sun | Review | Sample 5 cards | Spaced checks |
Aim 25–45 minutes/day—short and consistent beats cramming.
Spaced review loop
Cards only from human-verified notes; retest days 1/3/7/14; on misses rewrite your answer first, then ask what is still missing; prune fluent cards monthly.
Spaced-review miss + my new answer. Point out missing essentials only—do not rewrite a long answer for me.
Q: { } My new A: { }
Anti-cheating boundaries
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Explain, quiz, critique your draft reasoning | Submit AI final homework as yours |
| Improve structure of work you already wrote | Synonym-spin entire assignments to dodge detection |
| Variants of public textbook drills | Leak unpublished exams and spread keys |
| Discuss methods/limits | Fabricate data or references |
Institutional rules always win; if unsure, treat ghostwriting as banned.
Tool hints (study)
| Need | Lean toward | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-turn tutoring | ChatGPT | Easy iteration |
| Long pasted papers | Long-context tools (e.g. Claude) | Still verify in PDF |
| Screenshots/charts | Gemini or multimodal ChatGPT | Check real upload limits |
| Chinese reasoning drills | Consider DeepSeek in co-tests | See selection guide |
Friday checklist
- ≥10 attempt-first items
- Cards verified against sources
- No unverified citations in paper notes
- No L2+ sensitive pastes
- Can Feynman one core concept
FAQ
Textbook vs model conflict?
Trust the assigned source. Ask for verification steps—not a verdict from the model.
Upload whole PDFs?
Mind copyright and privacy. Prefer abstract + your excerpts; never dump paid books onto unknown sites.
How to avoid illusion of competence?
Closed-book attempts, variants, spoken Feynman. If you cannot teach it, you do not know it.
Short on time?
Protect Pipeline A + spaced review; shrink papers to two abstracts + conclusions tied to exam topics.
Domestic entry for study?
Yes for non-sensitive material: entry. Longer-term access: China guide.
